As the new postcode system has landed on our doorsteps, Ireland is now up to speed with many of our neighbouring countries in Europe.
Launched on the 13th of July by Minister for Communications Alex White TD, Eircode has been rolled out nationally over the last month.
First of all you may ask the question, what is Eircode? The elements behind the new postcode is made up of alphanumeric code made up of two parts, which helps make life easier for businesses and households around Ireland.

One might argue that we were just fine without postcodes and why do we really need them? As part of the integrated PR & Marketing team that worked on the Eircode account, I can visible see why Eircode is crucial in today’s day and age.
In Ireland, over 35% of locations share the same address with at least another property. This has proved difficult for businesses, rural areas and day to day living. Time effective, stress-free, and a tool that actually makes life easier, why wouldn’t you use your Eircode?
One of the main advantages to Eircode is in times of emergency. If for instance an ambulance needs to be called and you have your Eircode at the ready, this could be the difference between life & death. This is an important message that has been communicated many times by the media & outreach programmes but also essential to reiterate the value of the Eircode tool.
The television ad is very relatable with a young man getting utterly frustrated, as the courier man driving is going left, right and not centre to the correct destination. I am a Kerry girl and I know myself I have been in that situation many a time! So, if you are using the new postcode system don’t forget the simple gentle reminders below;
- You don’t need to do anything to activate the Eircode. Simply detach the Eircode from your letter,which you will receive in the post, and keep it somewhere handy.
- Your address won’t change. The unique Eircode is simply added to your address.
- It is not compulsory to use your Eircode, but you will get all the benefits of improved delivery of goods
- It doesn’t cost anything for a householder to use their Eircode
- You can look up an address to find its unique Eircode with the Eircode Finder tool, visit www.eircode.ie.
